Leather is a natural product and like anything in nature, no two are alike. All leather has unique qualities due to the nature of the lifestyle of the cows, steer and water buffalo. They live in nature and therefore have insect bites, barbwire marks, heal scars, fat wrinkles and branding marks. The purer the leather, the more these markings show. These are natural occurrences and are not considered defects, but rather distinctive markings of full, top grain leather. Most high quality leathers are dyed and the translucent quality of the leather is apparent.
This is the truest, purest leather one can buy. It has spectacular hand, full top grain and is the smallest percentage of all leather hides in the marketplace. Little is done to the natural beauty of this hide other than it is tumbled gently with aniline dye in a drum. Aniline dye is transparent and allows all the natural markings of the leather to show through. There are no corrections or alterations made to the surface of the leather. In time, rich patina appears with pure aniline leather and it is a testament to its natural markings; therefore, shading within a hide, and from hide to hide, can and will exist.
This leather is corrected with buffing and sanding on the surface. It is aniline dyed, but has a light pigment coat of opaque dye applied to the surface to even out the color. It is less likely to fade or stain. The leather is embossed with rollers or flat decorative copper plates that are pressed into it. Several layers of color are applied, usually by hand, which are rubbed and tipped with more color. In order for the embossing to maintain its appearance and shape, this leather can’t be as supple to the touch, thereby limiting its use to certain placements on a frame. Sometimes there are plate or roller marks on the the hides. These are part of the nature of the embossing process and are not considered flaws.
This leather is 100% natural and comes from cows and steers. They are processed and cleaned, but these are all natural hides. There are summer coats and winter coats. The cows and steers are raised all over the world – no two are alike.
